On January 27, 2021, the Sierra Madre Library Board of Trustees decided to recommend that the City invest in the repair and renovation of the 1955 library building, reversing their previous support for a citizen-drive campaign to fund a new 21st century library for the community. On February 9, 2021, the Sierra Madre City Council unanimously voted to “receive and file” this recommendation without further comment.
The Sierra Madre Library Foundation was formed in 2019 with the sole purpose of raising funds for technology, furnishings and fixtures of a new library and partnering with the Friends of the Sierra Madre Library, library patrons, community members and City officials to design and promote the construction of a new facility on the present site to serve the identified needs of Sierra Madre and library patrons of all ages for decades to come. In light of the shift in direction chosen by the Trustees and City Council, the Foundation Board has decided to indefinitely suspend our activities and monitor the City’s development of the alternative plan to renovate the existing building.
We deeply appreciate the interest and support shown for the Library Foundation and its mission by our fellow Sierra Madreans and library advocates and strongly encourage you to actively monitor discussions at Library Trustee Board and City Council meetings about the library building that will have lasting impacts on library services and the town as a whole.
